Halep Simona Hires New Coach

Halep caused a surprise earlier this month when she split with Wim Fissette, the man who helped establish her as one of the leading players in the women’s game.
She had her best year yet in 2014 under Fissette, reaching her first Grand Slam final – at the French Open – and the final of the WTA Tour Finals.
Ionita, 31, has coached another Romanian, Sorana Cirstea, who despite her current ranking of 92 had been as high as 21.
Ionita is an ex-pro, but of little note – his career-high ranking was 187.
Halep has also hired renowned coach Thomas Hogstedt as a consultant for three tournaments, in Shenzhen, Sydney and the Australian Open.
Halep has history when it comes to surprise partings with coaches. Adrian Marcu, the man who coached her in her breakthrough season in 2013, was dismissed in November that year.
Under his guidance, she won her first six WTA tournaments and rose in the rankings from 47 to 11.
