Azarenka granted Australian Open wildcard

Former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka has been granted a wildcard for next year's Australian Open in Melbourne.
The two-time women's singles champion in Melbourne is now ranked No. 210 in the world having played only two official tournaments in the past 19 months.

Azarenka gave birth to her first child in December 2016 and then became involved in a legal dispute over child custody with her son's father.

But she will return for the 2018 Australian Open and tournament director Craig Tiley said every assistance would be provided to Azarenka in order for her to compete at the event where she has achieved her greatest success.

"Vika's current situation is obviously very difficult for her and we have reached out to offer any support we can," he said.

"As a two-time Australian Open champion, we've awarded her a wildcard and look forward to seeing her back on court in Melbourne in January."

Azarenka said she was looking forward to returning to the tournament where she has hoisted the trophy twice.

"I'm so excited about coming back to Melbourne for the Australian Open - it's my favourite tournament," Azarenka said.

"I've won there twice and always feel so comfortable on court and the city is great.

"It's been a tough year and being able to come back to the [Australian Open] will be a really positive way to start 2018."
