Some
of the medallists in the 2014 Nigerian University Games at the Obafemi
Awolowo University, Ile Ife, on Friday complained over the medals
presented to them, claiming they were of “low quality”.
The organisers of the competition gave medals to athletes who came first, second and third in their events.
Our correspondent observed that the logo of the Games was not engraved on the medals.
One of the medallists, who spoke on
condition of anonymity, said, “This is bad. How can we prove that we
got these medals from NUGA when there is no logo of the
competition on them? I’m highly disappointed. Anyone could have bought
these medals from anywhere.”
Another medallist said, “This is not my
first time of winning medals in NUGA. This is not how they look like.
They normally have the NUGA logo.”
Meanwhile, Obafemi Awolowo University and University of Calabar will meet in the final of the football event.
